A rare journey across one of West Africa’s last great frontiers

Few travelers ever set foot in Niger.

Fewer still cross it from the lush banks of the Niger River to the ancient caravan city of Agadez — gateway to the Sahara and heart of Tuareg culture. This Expedition takes you through the Sahel’s most fascinating cultural landscapes: royal Hausa cities, remote mud-brick villages, nomadic Tuareg communities, and one of Africa’s most extraordinary cultural gatherings: the legendary Guérewol Festival.

Over seven days we will traverse a country that still feels profoundly untouched by modern tourism.

Itinerary

Disclaimer: this itinerary is tentative. Due to the adventurous nature of this Expedition we can't guarantee a fixed route. When navigating these off the beaten path regions safety will be our number one priority and so, it may suffer changes.

Before Niger II, you have the chance to start your West African journey in Mali IV Expedition (Oct 7th-9th).

Day 1 — Arrival in Niamey

Arrival in Niger’s laid-back capital on the banks of the Niger River. After check-in, we begin exploring with visits to the National Museum, the Grand Mosque, and the city’s vibrant craft markets before watching sunset along the river.

Day 2 — Niamey → Kouré → Dosso → Konni

Drive east through Sahel landscapes to the Kouré Giraffe Reserve for a walking safari with the last West African giraffes. Continue to Dosso to visit the Sultan’s Palace and learn about Zarma royal traditions before reaching Konni for the night.

Day 3 — Konni → Yama → Tahoua

Journey deeper into Niger’s Sahel heartland, stopping in Yama to admire striking mud-brick architecture, mosques, and granaries. Along the way we visit traditional villages before arriving in Tahoua.

Day 4 — Tahoua → Agadez

Head north into the Sahara, passing Tuareg villages and nomadic camps as the landscape gradually turns desert. Picnic lunch en route before reaching Agadez, the legendary caravan city and gateway to the Sahara.

Day 5 — Agadez Exploration

Full day exploring UNESCO-listed Agadez: the iconic mud-brick Great Mosque, the Sultan’s Palace, historic explorer houses, and the atmospheric old town with the spectacular Guérewol festival in the evening.

Day 6 — Agadez → Tanout → Zinder

Cross desert landscapes toward Zinder, the historic center of Hausa culture. Explore the Sultan’s Palace, the old Birni quarter, and traditional leather and dye workshops before a cultural dinner with music.

Day 7 — Zinder → Niamey

Morning domestic flight back to Niamey, concluding the expedition with transfers to the airport.

You have the chance to continue your West African journey to Burkina IV Expedition (Oct 16th-18th).

The best way to see not only the Mt Hagen festival but also the highlights of the PNG highlands. Safe, exciting, and lots of fun.

A spiritual and cultural-focussed expedition, not the typical style of other Wander trips, but I absolutely loved it. Bhutan is beautiful and this expedition was the best way to see it, the tricky visa and tour guide requirements were all handled and the itinerary gave the very best of the country in a few days. Northern India was equally serene and even as someone who hates hiking, having a great group to champion you along the way made it fun.

The best overland adventure you could ever ask for. Two weeks, 22 people, 6 cars, endless laughs. Sure, the days are long, and you definitely need to bring snacks, but it’s so much fun and the best way to see the parts of Africa that most people don’t go to! And it has everything - beach, nature, pool days, local communities, cities and middle-of-nowhere adventures. I’d even go as far as to say I’d do it again….. never say never!
