South Sudan uncovered! Usually travellers neglect this country, or only scratch the surface with a quick visit of the capital. South Sudan is the newest country in the World, but has a rich cultural heritage we'll be exploring in depth on our week-long Expedition. We will drive up North and expedition through Mundari and Dinka country, looking to live with them, share meals and sleep in their cattle camps. Some of these herds of sudanese cows can be worth millions and so, the whole clan protects them fiercely. This Expedition is one of a kind, and you don't want to miss it!
Itinerary
Day 0: Arrival in Juba
You are welcome to arrive in Juba a day early, or landing directly on Day 1, in the early morning before we start.
Day 1: Bor town, White Nile, & Visit to Dinka Cattle Camp
The expedition begins in Juba. The morning will be dedicated to registering at the tourism office. Once registration is complete, the journey starts North to Bor, the capital of the Jonglei State. Upon arrival, we board a traditional boat to navigate the White Nile, one of the most significant rivers in Africa.
Our boat journey takes us into the heart of the Sudd, one of the world's largest wetlands. This vast and almost impassable swampland is home to unique wildlife and serves as a crucial ecosystem for both local communities and migratory birds. We will explore the narrow channels, observing fishermen at work and soaking in the untouched beauty of this remote region.
This is a very unique experience, since the only bridge that crosses the Nile in South Sudan is in Juba. Then, we return to Bor for exploring the town .
In the evening, we will arrive to a Dinka cattle camp. This immersive experience provides an opportunity to meet the Dinka tribe and witness their deep connection with their prized cattle. The day concludes with a breathtaking sunset photography session featuring the iconic Sudanese longhorn cows, before spending the night in tents at the cattle camp.
Day 2: Juba & Mundaris
After sunrise and breakfast with the Dinkas, we continue our journey back to Juba, to explore the capital.
Upon arrival in the city, there will be a short evening tour, allowing travelers to explore some key landmarks.
In the afternoon, we set off for Terekeka, home to the Mundari people. The drive offers scenic views of South Sudan’s countryside, with occasional wildlife sightings and traditional villages along the way. By mid-afternoon, we reach a Mundari cattle camp, where we are welcomed by this proud and resilient tribe. Their camps, covered in a constant haze of smoke from burning cow dung (used to protect the cattle from insects), create an almost surreal atmosphere. Enjoy another photogenic sunset when the entire landscape is bathed in golden hues.
Dinner will be enjoyed at camp, offering an opportunity to engage with the Mundari and learn about their customs.
Day 3: Full Day with the Mundari & Return to Juba
This full-day experience allows travelers to fully immerse themselves in the extraordinary lifestyle of the Mundari people. We will witness their daily routines, from milking cows and crafting intricate hairstyles with ash to the unique way they train and care for their cattle.
Midday, we take a break from the heat, relaxing in the shade and enjoying a simple but authentic meal with our Mundari hosts and we will start the drive back to Juba. Upon arrival in the city, there will be a short evening tour, allowing travelers to explore some key landmarks or enjoy a farewell dinner together.
Overnight: Juba
Day 4: Goodbyes and Fly out
After breakfast, the worst moment of every Expedition: we say goodbye. The Expedition is finished and we fly out.

Takes only 10 minutes and it helps us create the best travel family!
The best way to see not only the Mt Hagen festival but also the highlights of the PNG highlands. Safe, exciting, and lots of fun.
A spiritual and cultural-focussed expedition, not the typical style of other Wander trips, but I absolutely loved it. Bhutan is beautiful and this expedition was the best way to see it, the tricky visa and tour guide requirements were all handled and the itinerary gave the very best of the country in a few days. Northern India was equally serene and even as someone who hates hiking, having a great group to champion you along the way made it fun.
The best overland adventure you could ever ask for. Two weeks, 22 people, 6 cars, endless laughs. Sure, the days are long, and you definitely need to bring snacks, but it’s so much fun and the best way to see the parts of Africa that most people don’t go to! And it has everything - beach, nature, pool days, local communities, cities and middle-of-nowhere adventures. I’d even go as far as to say I’d do it again….. never say never!
My trip to Libya with you Wander Expeditions was unreal! Everything was super well organized, the group vibe was like family, and the guide kept things fun with stories and games along the way. Libya itself blew me away amazing people, amazing places, and good energy everywhere we went.
A pure pleasure celebrating with Alvaro and the gang - vibes unbeatable & can’t wait for the next reunion!
